Lee Fields – You’re The Kind Of Girl

“True love is just a stone’s throw away” I will say this about that, this is a helluva song, and I have never heard of Lee Fields before until today driving around and CBC2 introduced us with this amazing classic. Apparently Lee got his start singing James Brown songs and people recognized his talent. Thanks to CBC, Lee Fields and whoever invented the car radio, they all combined and made my day better. Have a Listen. Peace.

Things to Enjoy – The Recipe – Kendrick Lamar Feat. Dr. Dre

Just heard this song The Recipe by Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre and I have to say I’m in. Been a while since Dre was on anything that hooked me but the easy warmth this song radiates is amazing. The sample form the band Twin Sister floats and submerges so effortlessly above and below the rest of the track. The song paints its’ picture of Cali life so well you can want to go swimming it doe not stop there it invites you to come join the women, weed, weather. It is an effective invitation as time spend on google images was well spent for me on this overcast Vancouver day. The song prompted me to take a look at my own city and wonder why no one has captured Vancouver, BC’s spirit so well on record yet. If they have I haven’t heard it. It may come down to talent and genre but i’m not sure. I think there is a vancouver feeling, it’s not melancholic but whatever the opposite of that is. We aren’t smiling all the time but we do smile here, it so easy to be here in Vancouver in almost every way, except financially. That is the link between this song written about California and the City I call home. Enjoy.

Top Ten reasons I should work for Hootsuite #2 – My Will Power

Straight to it,

When people talk about Kobe Bryant no matter where they start out they end up at his will. His unmatched drive to win. There are stories floating around the NBA about how it is only his sheer will and focus that keep him going after 19 professional seasons. Kobe Bryant is a hero of mine. He plays in that role because of my respect for his ability to push aside everything else and focus on one thing. Winning through will power. It’s been amazing to watch for 16 NBA seasons. I don’t share the championship rings but I do share the will to be better. The will to achieve.

My parents always called me a willful child. When I was a kid I think that meant ‘bad’. I have no objections to this description. I embrace it, I am willful. Having a strong will, gives me the confidence to stay in the fight. My will tells me that I will win too, just like Kobe. If I want it; I will get it. When my son was born I quit smoking, it wasn’t on the day but it was close, I woke up and decided that was it. I did not ever give it a second thought, I made the call and that was it. Friends often asked me if I missed it, to which I could honestly answer “I don’t think about it”. The day before I quit I was a smoker. The day I quit, I wasn’t.

I made it through Design school the same way. It had been years since I had graduated high school, and here I was enrolled in college, on my way to my first class. I was nervous, I had no goals, only expectations. When I came home elated after the first week of school, I decided I was going to be the best. It’s a subjective thing, being the best in a design school. How can that be quantified? We may never know, but what we do know is that I finished with an high ‘A’ average and worked on professional grade projects while still in school, the teachers were always excited at my projects and my classmates respected my vision and skill. I willed this to happen.

Strong will may as well be synonymous with sacrifice. To me they are if not very similar, then inter-related. I sacrificed my time in pursuit of a goal, to continue the sacrifice when I wanted to stop I willed myself back on course. The resulting success fed back on me, pushing me further like a wave might if I wasn’t already so physically fit ( See blog #9 , You Never Know). Hard to stop a wave right? Ever tried? You have? Are you crazy? Cool. Moving on.

This blog is a testament to my will. I am impressively sick right now. It is nearing 4am, I cannot breathe, in fact maybe if you read this anyone, comment to see if I made it through the night. I have had roughly 16 hours sleep in 4 days, and while I get that being exhausted from staying up late to tweet and blog, is a first world problem. Still pretty easy to fall asleep right here at these comfortably smooth keys, I’ve done it before. As mush as I want sleep, I want to finish this more. These 10 updates showcasing who I am and how and why I do things, are my impression. At first this blog wasn’t the most appealing visually, but it is improving, I’m working back over the old posts to fix the spelling and grammer errors. My will makes me stay up till the birds wake up to read about the top blogs and what they have that mine doesn’t, yet.

Thank you

Tomorrow the creme de la creme, the cream of the crop, the big duke-a-roo, numero uno.

Top Ten reasons I should work for Hootsuite #3 – I Refine

Evening Y’all,

Smaller, More compact, less sharp corners, bigger, brighter, faster. All these adjectives and more have been used to describe this blog by the people that know it exists. Not to me per say but I assume those words are being bandied about freely. Less emphasis on this being a work in progress or a statement of my effort ‘that poor man is trying so hard, someone should tell him’. I believe that with continued effort on both my twitter front and this one, and if I include LinkedIn and Pinterest. This will be something worth reading. It is on its way to that. The single reason for that belief is refinement. I believe that to really come to understand anything you have to do it. One has to do whatever ‘that’ is for them over and over being open to critique and praise equally but placing neither above the value of repetition and refinement.

The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.
Albert Einstein

As a bartender in a nightclub I have refined my craft over 7 years. Every single action I take when I am behind the bar has purpose. I am economical. I have worked out the best way to deal people in almost every situation one could come across in a nightclub with the goal of maximizing sales, personal profit, new business generation and repeat business satisfaction. These are not easy to balance goals while serving no less than 4 drinks per minute for sometimes more than 4 hours at a time. On paper that might not sound like much. In person it is another thing to be able to keep up that pace. Anyway I have refined my skill. I believe in it, the process of whittling away all the extra, and leaving a lean efficient tool to wield how the holder sees fit, because when you have refined something over hours and months and years, then you can begin to express yourself whatever the discipline. The expression of yourself through your craft is the by-product of refinement and makes all the work worth while.

Malcolm Gladwell had some popular ideas on the subject of success and reasons why.
part 1 –
part 2 –

No matter what you call it or why it is, I have had success at a high level in almost everything I have ever tried because I refine my actions. In every level of my life I have used this part of me the self-reflective competitive part to move around or through any barrier to my achieving my goals. The #3 reason I should work for Hootsuite is that I embrace daily the process of refinement and bring it to all that I do.

Thank you

Beach House has a New Song – Myth

Beach House from Baltimore, also home to the world of The Wire, is one of my favorite bands. They have a sound that seems like it is from the future and the past all at once. Their last album TEEN DREAM was basically my favorite album of the last 2 years in play counts off my iTunes. Last night while alot of people were sleeping and some were writing blog posts about how a certain company should give them a job. (I’m looking at you Hootsuite.) Beach House released the first single of their upcoming new album Bloom. Let’s all bathe in the warm aural glow that is Myth.

Album released date May 15th

Top Ten reasons I should work for Hootsuite #5 – I Talk to Listen

Buenas Noches,

So we’ve reached the midway point in this little experiment. My attempt to court the affections of Hootsuite, she shines so brightly, how could I not. It would be rude not to. Damn those amazing owls and all their fun at SXSW and their interviews with Andersen Cooper and their new offices, I’m not YET apart of. Feeling like Gollum out here or at least someone facing Gandalf the Grey.

So at this point the blog can only improve I’ve solicited the help of some friends at The Dependent Magazine, and CTV, to help me make this a better experience for the end user, You. My many thanks to those that have helped, It’s still not where I’d like it to be but it is heading in that direction. With forward progress being made everyday I’m going switch gears today from me to You.

I was beginning to feel earlier in the week that there was just too much me. Occupational hazard of operating a blog with the sole purpose of showcasing oneself for a position in either marketing or community building with one company. There are certain limitations that come with that. There must be some emphasis on oneself, an impression must be made, stories, must be relayed, evidence presented to support the claims for employment.

Today I’m trying not to forget that their are people with their own wants and needs on the other end of this. What do they want from their time here in my freshly developed neck of the woods? What is going to make them take notice or forget quickly what they’ve seen or read? So I’m going to ask some questions and tell maybe one tale and that’ll be tonight. Sound good? I’ll start with me, but not a story.

I like bartending, when I was coming up in the trade I LOVED IT. I learned the trade, I sought out mentors behind the bar, I never forgot how to make a drink twice, I moved up incredibly fast. Made a few drinks that went in some papers. I had a good time.

There is something uniquely alluring about being the centre of attention and the man whose attention everyone pays for. There is still something appealing to me about the process and the exchange, having someone come who doesn’t know what they want and delivering unto them something surprising, something stunning. Talking with people, not at them, asking the right questions and taking in the response and coming up with a solution in a very short span of time. Some people come in and want to let loose but can’t, they need someone to make it okay. Someone to encourage their freedom from their own personal pressure. Some people want to be Very Important People, and listening to them means making them bigger than they normally are. Its all in the job. The job, my mentor told me was to listen, he wasn’t saying don’t talk but make listening the focus. He told me they (the customers) want to be heard and agreed with, and I found that they did. I found that as much as I have to say that there were less people who want to hear it. Over nightclub music volume and nightclub alcohol levels, conversations get pretty distorted.

I prefer to be in a conversation as opposed to a series of monologues and I swear it is that I seek know. The free exchange of ideas. This blog is me talking, talking so that hopefully I can be in a position soon to listen to you. To take in what you want or need in a community or marketing plan and come up with surprising solutions. What can you tell me today Ben, anything? Can you tell me about the why and how of you coming up into the media game? Creating an evangelist role for yourself? What inspires you to create electronic music?

Dave can you tell me when you son is driving you home after holiday parties how satisfying it must be to have done your job as a father for so long that this is possible? Can you tell me about the sacrifices you’ve made to do your dream job and how you balance that with everything else in your life? Can you tell me the things that drive you to get up in the morning earlier than other people or do you sleep in later and deal with the consequences of that. How much does either of you think about physical versus digital identity in the current world and where this kind of duality may take us as a nation, and as a species?

I wish I could pick either of your brains for the presentation I’m making tomorrow, to take over a local restaurants social media marketing.

No wrap up tonight just a regular ole Thank You

Top Ten reasons I should work for Hootsuite #8 – I Read Everything

Good Afternoon Citizens of the world,

I have faced two setbacks in getting this blog out. Suffice to say that learning the ropes of blogging platforms and typing in general are working beside me right now(I lost my well written with plenty of time draft that I’d intended to post or maybe word-press is hiding it and while I work on finding it here’s this..). They aren’t with me, but they are not completely against me either. I have to work very soon so this will be brief, possibly I’ll add more after work but no promises. Going to boil it down to the essential parts. I read a lot. I take in a tremendous amount of usable information in a week. This gives me, just like anyone who does it a wide perspective on matters at hand. I, in my conversations with both Ben Watson VP of Marketing and Dave Olsen Vp of Community mentioned a magazine that I hold in the upper echelon of printed materials for the quality and diversity of it’s feature pieces. Monocle magazine. I read that and feel more connected with more of the world. Its a feeling that I look for in my reading materials. Discovery and refinement, which I hope will be a theme in all of these posts. You will discover me and time permitting I will refine your process of discovery. I love learning and want that to come across. Right now I am working on learning as much as I can about social media and marketing, how listening is the new talking and a bunch of other concepts that bear relevance on why we are here in the first place. I like and respect what you do there at Hootsuite and feel like I have a place there just waiting for me to dazzle, convince, plead, con, show and tell my way into it. I’ve got to go to work but I’m going to leave you with some books I’m into right now, and some websites I visited today.

Thank you
